Abstract:
As a continuation to the article titled “ϕ-Factors and Other Anomalies” published in August 1998, the author again urges the adoption of partial factors of safety in the ACI 318 Code. Partial factors of safety are applied to the concrete and steel materials individually. The inadequacy of the member-based ϕ-factors used in the current ACI 318 Code, and the potential benefits of using partial factors of safety, are demonstrated for reinforced concrete columns and beams as well as prestressed concrete elements.
