Abstract:
Interface properties in engineered cementitious composite (ECC) mainly depend on the nature of the fiber and whether the fiber is hydrophilic or hydrophobic - both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Results of the single fiber pullout test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images clearly reveal that polyestertype fiber is neither completely hydrophilic nor hydrophobic. Extensive work was carried out in the present investigation on interface tailoring to explore the capability of polyester-type fibers in the ECC matrix against pullout. Interface parameters for tailoring are cement-sand ratio, fly ash percentage, chemical treatments of the fiber, fiber orientation, and embedded length of the fiber in the matrix. Frictional bond strength, snubbing coefficient, and pullout energy are calculated. The slip hardening effect, due to abrasion and rupture of fiber during pullout after debonding, are observed in the single fiber pullout test.
