Abstract:
Two prototype admixtures, capable of protecting fresh concrete against freezing and of promoting significant strength gain at below freezing temperatures, were tested in northern Michigan during the winter. Concrete made with these admixtures placed on frozen ground was allowed to cure thermally, unprotected in the cold. Compared to concrete cured inside a heated shelter, the concrete made with the special admixtures turned out cheaper and every bit as good as the control. Currently, there is an industry initiative to expand the use of concrete in cold climates.
