Abstract:
This article discussed the scaling performance of three concrete mixtures typically used by the homeowner, by municipalities for sidewalks, and by state transportation departments for highways. Test revealed that deicing salts containing potassium were more severely damaged than those that did not contain potassium. Salt containing magnesium was found to reduce the freeze/thaw damage, but did result in scaling of higher strength concrete. Electron microscopy was utilized to investigating scaling phenomena.
