Abstract:
This paper discusses some practical applications of a previously published method to assess the aggressiveness of water toward concrete. After a brief review of the method, four case studies are presented, covering two concrete reservoirs, an ash-handling plant clarifier, and a no-fines concrete subgrade slab. It is shown that the method is able to explain the observed corrosive effects of aggressive waters. The paper also covers discussion of comments received from others on the method, and use of the method to provide design recommendations for new construction. The method is commended to designers and owners of concrete structures exposed to aggressive waters.
