Abstract:
The propagation of microcracks in concrete subjected to compressive loads was closely examined, and the effects of aggregate arrangement on the fracture behavior of concrete were studied. Model concrete specimens that contain different numbers of embedded limestone aggregates (1, 5, and 13 aggregates) were examined. To measure local displacements under complex compressive fracture, a subregion scanning computer vision (SSCV) system was developed. SSCV provides full-field displacement information with high accuracy. Fracture processes in concrete were well- visualized in displacement contour maps. It was found that the fundamental fracture processes are strongly affected by aggregate spacing.
