Abstract:
Many statistical surveys point out that failures and total collapses occur more frequently during construction than during the service life of the structure. Failures of concrete structures during construction most often occur as a result of formwork failure, concrete member failure due to overloading, or lack of concrete strength. This paper reviews the construction loads and the behavior of the early-age concrete members that are called upon to withstand these construction loads. Selected construction failure cases are presented to demonstrate some critical aspects of concrete building construction. A construction example is presented to illustrate a procedure of analyzing and evaluating multistory buildings during construction.
