Abstract:
Primarily due to safety and economic considerations, nondestructive test procedures have received a great deal of attention in recent years. There has been a considerable amount of controversy regarding the property of concrete that is actually measured in pullout tests. Experimentally, pullout tests appear to correlate well with the compressive strength of concrete. In this paper, arguments and illustrations on the interpretation of some analytical and experimental investigations are focused to put the current status of the pullout test method into perspective. First, the pullout test procedure and a summary of experimental findings are briefly presented. Subsequently, the available analytical studies are evaluated in an effort to emphasize the significance of the reported studies. Finally, the behavior of concrete subjected to a pullout force based on nonlinear finite element analysis using a general purpose, plastic-fracture finite element computer code is described.
