Abstract:
Below-ground vaults are being used as alternatives to shallow land disposal for low-level radioactive waste (LAW) at A Savannah River site. Reinforced concrete is the predominant material used in the construction of the vaults. The design criteria for the structures requires that cracking be controlled to an absolute minimum to reduce leakage potential. The design criteria for certain LAW facilities also contains a requirement for 100-year minimum service life.
