Abstract:
Hollow-block armor units were tested for impact resistance by repeated dropping onto a specially prepared rigid surface. Impact properties were characterized by determining the number of drops required from various drop heights for first cracking and disintegration. Reductions in size and void space ratio improved the drop impact resistance. The behavior of three series of unreinforced units with varying sizes and void space ratios were unified using a simplified theory of impact loading and stress waves. Reinforcing the units with 0.6 percent (v/v) coir (coconut) fiber was found to improve the first cracking behavior slightly and the disintegration behavior markedly.
