Abstract:
A new application of fibers in concrete is discussed. The application combines the technologies of fiber reinforced concrete and cellular concrete to produce modular panels for residential housing construction. Material production methods are discussed, as are the results of a limited evaluation of the basic engineering properties of the material, with particular attention given to the intended use. The fiber reinforced cellular concrete, termed FRCC, panel has been applied to the construction of several homes in the Hurricane Andrew damaged area of Dade County Florida, and several aspects of their design that relate particularly to wind-threatened communities are discussed. The material demonstrates excellent missile impact resistance and strength for the proposed application.
