Abstract:
The current versions of the ACI Building Code and Mexico City Design Regulations on reinforced concrete use the load and resistance factor design approach. Compatibility and consistency between the reliability indexes associated with flexure, compression plus bending of unconfined short columns, and shear and torsion limit states are reviewed for each code. The reliability indexes ¯ for different structural cross-sectional properties are calculated. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used, and for one case, the first-order second moment method is also included in the analysis. In all cases, the statistical characteristics assumed for materials and geometric properties, as well as for quality control, are typical of Mexican construction. Results revealed some inconsistencies in ACI 318-89 code reliabilities. No incompatibilities were found for the Mexican code.
