Abstract:
This article contains information on the behavior and design of structural concrete facilities under the effects of short duration, high amplitude, and dynamic loads. Such loads are related to industrial or military explosions, vehicle impact, dropped objects, terrorist activities, or wave impact on marine structures. Typical design procedures usually do not explicitly address these issues, and the ACI 318-89 code is not directly applicable for the design of such dynamically loaded structures. This article contains some of the main issues related to design for resisting short duration dynamic loads and a case study.
