Abstract:
The analysis of reinforced concrete structures is generally based on the assumption that all of the separate elements behave as a unit. Of course, the actual structure must be built piece by piece due to construction limitations. Nevertheless, one of the principal elements of the art of design is to produce monolithic behavior in the finished structure. Properly located construction joints, whether in precast or cast-in-place structures, will insure transmission of compressive forces in concrete and reinforcing steel. All tensile forces required to cross the construction joint must be carried by the reinforcement.
