Abstract:
A lot of attention has been given to the development of degradation modelsbecause of growing concern about durability and lack of in-service performance. Perfect models will not produce perfect designs, since there are many factors which contribute to good performance in service, as field experience has clearly shown. Many of these are dependent on good design, detailing, and construction practices, and on an understanding and treatment of the loads involved. Therefore, the development of predictive models has to be seen in the context of a balanced overall design method, which should satisfy performance criteria that need to be more clearly stated than they are at present.
