Abstract:
Larger-scale arch-shaped test specimens were subjected to high-magnitude concentrated patch loads. In separate test series, loads were applied in different positions to investigate a compressive failure mode and a more ductile flexural failure mode. The provisions of the ACI Building Code could correctly predict the capacity of the specimens failing in uniaxial compression, but were unable to predict accurately the capacities of the beam regions failing in shear and flexure. This is because the shear span-to-depth ratio of these regions of the specimens are such that the load is carried partly by "deep beam" behavior despite the fact that they are not classified as being "deep" according to ACI 318-89.
