Abstract:
This paper describes an apparatus which is capable of measuring permeability during an uniaxial compressive load test. The main components of the apparatus include two specially designed platens for transferring the compressive load while controlling the air permeability and room temperature vulcanized (RTV) rubber which is used to seal the mortar sample. Tests show that the rubber, while effectively sealing the specimen, provides minimal confinement, which has an insignificant effect on the stress- strain response of the test specimen. Preliminary tests using this apparatus show correlation between load induced micro-cracks and permeability.
