Abstract:
The validity of various chemical formulas proposed in the literature for predicting the hydraulic activity of granulated blast furnace slags was investigated. Eight South African clinkers were ground under constant laboratory conditions to ordinary portland cement slags (OPCS). In the same mill, two South African, one British, one American, and one Netherlands slag were ground to either constant surface area or constant residue on a 90-m screen. The ground slags and OPCS were mixed in equal proportions, and strength development of these mixes was compared with that of the OPCS. It was found that the formulas proposed in the literature did not adequately predict the slag hydraulicity. Strength development of OPCS-ground slag mixes depended on the fineness of the slag and hydraulic properties of the cement.
