Abstract:
The corrosion of metals, specifically steel, in concrete has been estimated to represent a multibillion dollar annual economic loss. Despite this, far too little money has been expended for research on this problem, and often such funds have gone to engineering departments instead of to chemists. Corrosion chemistry, and the study of it, is needed here, and it should be analytical, inorganic, and physical chemists with an interest in concrete who should be directing this most vital research. Without such improved understanding, important preventive and remedial steps may not take place.
