Abstract:
Numerous investigations have shown the maturity model to be inaccurate in predicting the strength of concrete at strength levels beyond about 40 percent of the normal 28-day strength. Paper provides a critical review of the development of the maturity concept with an eye toward tracing the origins of its shortcomings. It then presents a modified maturity model that more accurately estimates the strength at later ages. The modification incorporates the relative strength as a new variable in the temperature function. The new model generally provides distinct improvements in later-age strength prediction for plain portland cement concretes. Since it is based on only a few mixes and only isothermal curing conditions, it should be regarded as preliminary.
