Abstract:
The case histories of two building renovation projects are described, including the distress encountered during their renovation, the evaluation methods used to judge the significance of the distress, and results and conclusions are drawn. They show that the investigating engineer should be prepared to encounter hidden flaws when working on older buildings. Tradesmen's reports of distress or unusual building movements should be thoroughly studied before being dismissed. These two case histories also give examples of material sampling and testing that can provide necessary data when plans are nonexistent or unavailable.
