Abstract:
The role the construction engineer plays in building concrete bridges, particularly modern segmental-type bridges, is reviewed. Factors that make these structures more or less constructible are also discussed. The author concludes that the problems that have beset the construction of many recent major concrete bridges have been more the result of a confrontational attitude between the various parties involved than any fundamental deficiency in technique on the part of either the designer or the contractor.
