Abstract:
A study was commissioned by the City of Tulsa, Okla., to examine the use of regular and quick-setting controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) utilized as backfill for street and municipal infrastructure repair projects. Qualities of bearing strength, excavation time and difficulty, and subsidence were measured for four mix designs placed in both laboratory and field environments. A cost analysis compared with aggregate base granular backfill was also prepared. The findings indicated that quick-setting CLSM mixes appear the best choice as backfill materials based on the criteria of easy future excavation and early minimum specified strength to support construction and vehicular loads.
