Abstract:
Describes a unique regional construction technique called cobblestone masonry that grew out of the construction of the Erie Canal and flourished in the United States between 1825 and 1865. Uniform-sized cobblestones (from 2 to 20 in. {50 to 250 mm} in diameter) are placed in horizontal rows as a facing veneer for fieldstone masonry. Limes and natural cements were the commonly used mortars.
