Abstract:
Identifies three troublesome areas in the construction industry where unclear definition of responsibility sometimes results in failure, which is followed by long and difficult disputes and often litigation. These areas, referred to as orphans because nobody wants to take responsibility, are formwork design, precast and prestressed concrete design, and masonry design. Three case histories involving these categories are described, covering technical details of the failures, descriptions of the failure investigations, identification of causes leading to the failures, and issues of responsibility.
