Abstract:
Describes design and construction of an urban traffic interchange that incorporates an artist's designs interpreting the culture of the American Indians who originally occupied the project site into structural elements and wall panels. Columns were constructed in the shape of traditional figures. Other figures in concrete relief against an adobe background were attached to abutment and retaining walls. Traffic was maintained throughout construction, the construction budget was reduced, and public support was gained for a potentially controversial project.
