Abstract:
Building design teams sometimes encounter a site with subsurface conditions that present potentially large settlements to the structure being designed. They have three choices: use a foundation system that bypasses the compressible materials; modify the subsurface materials; or design for the anticipated settlements. A number of procedures for dealing with large settlements are discussed.
