Abstract:
Describes a procedure developed for optimal design of columns of general shapes subjected to multiple loading conditions. The design variables are defined so that the solution yields the final reinforcement arrangement requiring the minimum amount of steel, according to detailing characteristics set by the designer. The problem formulated is that time-consuming searches for the precise location of the neutral axis are avoided through intermediate steps of the optimization process. The examples presented demonstrate the potential of the procedure in the design office.
