Abstract:
This paper describes the test results from six large pile caps which failed in two-way shear. It was found that the ACI Building Code procedures for shear design of pile caps cannot predict the experimental results because they neglect certain important parameters such as the amount of longitudinal reinforcement, and overemphasize other parameters such as the effective depth. Strut-and-tie models were found to describe the behavior of deep pile caps more accurately.
