Abstract:
Uses a probability-based approach to predict a safe service level for concentrated loads at edges of 8 in. (203 mm) thick untopped hollow-core slabs. Experimental results from full-scale tests based on nominal strengths of 8500 psi (59 MPa) are used to predict the statistical parameters of the resistance. The statistical properties for other concrete strengths are derived from the test results. A numerical example is included to illustrate the proposed methodology. The approach is expected to help designers make a rational selection of usable edge loads at the periphery of large floor openings.
