Abstract:
For the past 10 years, research has been under way in North America to introduce probability-based load and resistance factor design for concrete structures. Based on current knowledge of building load statistics, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard A58.1-1982 hasadopted a set of load factors that are different from those currently used by the ACI Building Code. This requires the development of resistance factors that are compatible to the ANSI load factors. The research reported herein discusses the development of such resistance factors for use in computing the moment magnification of reinforced concrete slender columns. Based on these discussions, a value of 0.7 to 0.75 is suggested for the stability resistance factor.
