Abstract:
Summarizes results of tests on 36 slab-interior column specimens with moment as well as shear transferred between column and slab. Variables included slab thickness, concrete strength, concrete type, integral beam stirrup reinforcement, the slab reinforcement pattern in the column region, column rectangularity, the slab reinforcement ratio, and the ratio of moment to shear. Results are compared with the predictions of the ACI Building Code (ACI 318-83) for moment transfer strength and equivalent column stiffness. The ACI Building Code provisions are shown to provide reasonable design predictions for strength. Stiffness predictions are reasonable only when the slab is uncracked in shear or torsion in the connection region. If the connection is cracked, stiffnesses are considerably less than ACI predictions and directly dependent on the amount of reinforcement within lines two slab thicknesses on either side of the column.
