Abstract:
Sources of loads for slab-column connections are summarized. An expression for shear strength in the absence of significant moment transfer is present, and various modification factors to account for geometry, deformation level, and concrete material are recommended. Details for reducing the possibility of progressive collapse are recommended. Three alternate procedures to compute strength under combined shear and moment transfer are discussed. The most general of those procedures is the eccentric shear stress model embodied in the ACI Building Code (ACI 318-83). A computationally simpler approach is presented for interior connections having a ratio of long-to-short column dimensions less than two. Use of the same approach for edge connections transferring moment about an axis perpendicular to the slab edge is discussed. A third procedure that further simplifies design of edge and corner connections is discussed. Recommendations for use of slab-column connections in buildings subject to earthquakes are presented also.
