Abstract:
This article examines the relationship between contractors, design professionals, and building codes on construction projects subject to such codes. The author concludes that contractors are not responsible for building code requirements unless they are explicitly specified in contract documents. Design professionals are responsible for including all applicable code requirements in their contract documents. Contractors are responsible for constructing the project in conformance with those contract documents, but not to anything beyond the contract documents, with the exception of standard construction practices.
