Abstract:
An alternate to the use of conventional materials, such as timber, for home construction was explored. By using a system of hybrid concrete-steel composite, the home in the Silver Spring, Md., area is a long-term, relatively maintenance-free, and energy-efficient structure. Along with concrete and recycled steel, insulated forms for concrete, geothermal energy, and recycled cotton insulation were used in the construction. The home did not cost much more than a conventionally built one, does not look much different, and does not have the problems, such as fire hazards, that come with wooden buildings.
