Abstract:
An experimental section of a frontage road of an interstate highway was built in Houston, Texas, in 1963-64 using lightweight aggregate, which was a locally manufactured expanded clay. After 34 years of use, the long-term performance of this pavement section was evaluated in comparison to normal concrete of the same age from an adjoining section of pavement. From visual inspection, the lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) was in relatively better condition. Microstructural study revealed that LWAC has performed extremely well in pavement application.
