Abstract:
A practical overview of the more commonly used cleaning, surface preparation, and field test methods is presented. The authors stress that even the best coating and patching materials may fail if the proper cleaning and preparation work is not performed. The guidelines and standards of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Concrete Institute, International Concrete Repair Institute, and National Association of Corrosion Engineers that relate to the coating and repair of concrete and masonry surfaces are reviewed. Correlation is made between the referenced standards and guidelines and the corresponding cleaning, preparation, and field test methods.
