Abstract:
An ability to rapidly replace deteriorated bridge decks minimizes public inconvenience, travel delay, and financial losses. While a variety of techniques have been developed to enhance the efficiency of rapid deck replacement, each of these methods has its own advantages. A comprehensive study was conducted to develop optimized systems for rapid deck replacement. Bridge owners, designers, and contractors were surveyed to gather information on current practices, to seek ideas for improvements of procedures, and to solicit recommendations for new bridge superstructure designs to enhance future rapid deck replacement. A number of superstructure modifications and design concepts are recommended.
