Abstract:
Using the physical and geometric properties of mortar and concrete brick (or block) elements, an attempt is made to predict the behavior and the ultimate strength of brick or concrete block masonry prisms or assemblage. The loading curve for a given strength mortar is obtained from experimentally measured stress-strain data. Failure envelopes were established for the mortar following Mohr's theory of failure line and for the block from the results of numerical analysis of solid masonry prisms. The proposed failure envelopes to predict ultimate strength of masonry prisms showed good agreement with available experimental data.
