Abstract:
Presents a simple and effective method to assess the degree of setting of cement pastes and mortars at any instant by a specially devised splitting tension test. The test gives as the result a value to the resistance of the material to external forces on the part of the interlinkage between solid particles, which is referred to as the splitting tensile strength. From a splitting tensile strength-time plot, either the theoretical instants at which setting begins and ends or any arbitrarily defined initial and final setting times can be estimated. Series of splitting tension tests were made to prove the suitability of the present method for determining the setting time of cement pastes and concrete mixtures, as well as to clarify the influences of various factors on their setting, including type of cement, water-cement ratio, mortar composition, temperature, and addition of chemical admixtures. On the basis of the results of these tests, it is recommended that the proposed method may be used as an alternative to the penetration tests described in ASTM C 191, C 206, C 403, and C 953.
