Abstract:
The neutron radiography technique developed for studying microcracking in concrete is used to investigate the effect of various types of compressive loads on the internal cracking of concrete cylinders. These studies include measurement of the incidence of microcracking in concrete cylinders as a function of concentric load and effect of eccentric loading on internal cracking. Use of the technique has shown a correlation between applied stress and the cumulative length of microcracks, as has been reported previously. The failure of a concrete cylinder loaded at a significant eccentricity is shown to be accompanied by the formation of a longitudinal crack under the load, with transverse cracks along the tension side of the specimen.
