Abstract:
One of my colleagues estimates the number of square inches of reinforcing steel As required for flexure by dividing the factored moment Mu in kip-ft by four times the effective depth d in inches. Is there any rational basis for this rule-of-thumb, and under what circumstances is it applicable?
