Abstract:
Our company is placing concrete floors on metal decking for a five-story hospital building. There will be three separate placements for each floor, so two construction joints are planned; but the general contractor has requested that there be no contraction joints. Without any contraction joints at regular intervals, we’re concerned that random cracking will occur throughout the slab. We’ve reviewed ACI documents but couldn’t find any specific references to contraction joints for concrete floors placed on metal decking. Should we insist on sawing contraction joints?
