Abstract:
Section 250.50 of the 2005 National Electrical Code (NEC)1 requires the reinforcing steel in footings to be connected by lead or jumper to the grounding system of the structure (commonly known as a Ufer ground). This requires that the lead or jumper protrude through the footing and be extended to be available within the structure for grounding to the electrical system. My concern is that the metal lead that protrudes through the footing will be exposed to the effects of moisture and corrosion that will lead to a possible pathway to allow oxidation and degradation of the structural steel reinforcement within the footing and the resultant rusting process could lead to concrete displacement and possible structural compromise. Does ACI have an opinion on this type of installation?
