Abstract:
Section 11.7.5 of ACI 318-05 states that the nominal shear-friction capacity (Vn) shall not be taken greater than the smaller of 0.2fc'Ac and 800Ac, where Ac is the area of concrete section resisting shear transfer. The commentary to this section (R11.7.5) states that the upper limit on shear strength is specified because Eq. (11-25) and (11-26) become unconservative if Vn has a greater value. Why do these equations become unconservative?
