Abstract:
The temperature variations and high salt content of Urmia Lake combine to produce a very severe environment. Many people would automatically assume that the extremely high chloride concentrations in this environment would result in high corrosion rates for uncoated reinforcing steel. Surprisingly, this was not found to be the case. In this research, existing concrete structures exposed to the harsh environment for almost 14 years were studied to evaluate the effect of the environment on concrete durability and to determine design criteria for the concrete in a new causeway structure.
