Abstract:
Although checking carbonation is usually done to establish factors contributing to the deterioration of a structure, it’s been suggested that the depth of carbonation at a crack can also be used to determine the crack’s age. Following a discussion of carbonation products and methods used to detect them, the limitations of using carbonation as an indicator of crack age are presented from a petrographer’s perspective.
