Abstract:
When viewing deficiency rates of bridges and the age at which bridge conditions reach a high priority for replacement, a similarity exists to actuarial science. There is an increasing interest in the highway engineering community to consider life cycle costs in the design of highway structures. When engineering data are entered into a model based on marketing decisions, a reasonable scenario for life cycle cost analysis can be established and the ultimate life expectancy of various design material alternatives can be estimated.
