Abstract:
A new surface overlay technology is helping keep bridge decks free of ice and snow pack and increasing safety during winter driving conditions. Following repair and preparation of the bridge deck, aggregate is broadcast into a layer of epoxy that has been spread on the surface. After removing loose aggregate, a second layer of epoxy is spread over the aggregate. The rough surface of the overlay increases surface friction for better traction and holds deicing chemicals for more efficient deicing. The epoxy also protects the bridge deck from deterioration caused by chlorides in the deicing chemicals.
