Abstract:
Laboratory studies have indicated that glass fibers may deteriorate rapidly in the high pH environment of concrete. Therefore, a number of codes do not permit the use of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) as primary reinforcement in concrete elements. To assess the durability of GFRP in field structures, a study was carried out on five concrete structures that included GFRP reinforcement. Examination of samples obtained by coring indicates that the GFRP has not suffered discernible damage during the first 5 to 8 years of exposure. The investigation and results are summarized.
